Visual Inspection

The objective of visual inspection is to understand the effect of environmental exposure on a products performance and reliability, the examination shall focus on physical changes produced by environmental tests, and which induce fatigue or crystalline growth mechanisms.

Samples are Inspected with Power Microscope to Examine for:

• Solder joint defects
• Part/PCB discolorations (especially due to thermal causes)
• Traces of abrasion
• Jumps, cracks, deformation of materials (especially for potting and sealing materials)
• Traces of corrosion and migration, especially silver and tin migration
• Evaluation of plastics for hydrolysis resistance
• Damage to through-plating of printed circuit boards, especially thermal vias
• Damage to the internal connection (paddles) of large electrolytic capacitors after mechanical load (vibration, mechanical shock, drop test)
• Connector pin damage (e.g. due to current, temperature, rubbing, oxidation)
• Other irregularities
